Lush Lawn and Distant Dome
I started with the sky, a soft blend of pale yellow, pink, and white, hinting at the gentle, diffused light of the afternoon. Then, the dome itself. Its commanding presence, with that beautiful greenish-blue patina, was the heart of the painting. I used deliberate, almost architectural strokes, playing with subtle shifts in color to suggest its curves and the way the light grazed its surface. The tall, elegant columns beneath it added to its stately feel.
The trees in the foreground were a riot of greens – deep, dark shadows beneath them, vibrant, almost neon greens where the light hit, and hints of orange and yellow in the foliage. I piled on the paint, wanting to convey their lushness and the way they partially obscured, partially framed, the distant dome. That one tall, slender tree on the right, with its distinctive shape, became a wonderful vertical anchor.
